What is SXSW?
South by Southwest is Austin's March week of tech, film and music. The 2027 dates used across calendars are 15 to 21 March, with the Innovation Conference track running 15 to 20. It is a city-as-venue festival, not a single hall. Founders who treat it as a cheaper Web Summit get the parties and miss the meetings. Badge type matters more here than at almost any other event in this directory.
Who goes to SXSW?
Tech operators and marketers on Interactive badges, film people on film badges, and a large brand-activation crowd that is in town for the week rather than for a stage. If you need a scheduled investor 1:1 machine, Slush or Web Summit is more honest. If you need cultural signal and brand work, this is the week.
SXSW side events
The unofficial week is the point. Brands take over bars, car parks and hotels. Search SXSW side event and you will find a second festival that does not require a Platinum badge. Official sessions still need the right badge. Aspire does not run those nights.
SXSW tickets and costs
Buy the badge on sxsw.com. Interactive, film, music and Platinum are different products. Confirm 2027 prices there. Downtown Austin hotels fill by autumn. Ride-hailing surge during the week is real. Walk or scooter the core. March in Austin can be 15 degrees or 30. Pack both.

Getting to Downtown Austin
Austin-Bergstrom is the airport. Downtown is 20 minutes. Do not rent a car for the core. Parking during SXSW is a second ticket.
Where to stay for SXSW
Downtown or East Austin if you want to walk. A Domain or South Congress hotel far from the convention core costs you the week in cars. Book early. The city is the venue and the rooms go.
What to know before booking SXSW
A music badge will not get you into the Innovation Conference, and a tech badge will not get you into the film premieres. Read the badge matrix before you pay. People who buy the wrong one are the March version of booking Devconnect when they meant Devcon.

Is SXSW good for fundraising?
Worse than Slush or Disrupt if you need scheduled investor meetings. Better if you need brand, media and cultural signal. People who fly in to raise a seed round and skip the badge matrix usually leave with parties and no process.
Where should I stay?
Downtown or walkable East Austin. The city is the venue. A hotel at the Domain during SXSW is how people spend March in ride-hailing surge pricing.
Does SXSW clash with anything?
MWC Barcelona is early March in 2027, 1 to 4 March on this directory. You cannot do both in person. Pick the mobile-operator room or the Austin week, not both.
