What is IAA MOBILITY?

IAA MOBILITY is the successor to the Frankfurt motor show, relocated to Munich and reframed from cars to mobility more broadly. The 2027 dates are 7 to 12 September, with a press day on the 6th. It is organised by the VDA, Germany's automotive industry association, in cooperation with Messe Muenchen, and the two have committed to Munich through at least 2031. Its unusual structure is the thing to understand before attending.

Who goes to IAA MOBILITY?

Vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers, mobility and charging infrastructure companies, software and autonomy teams, fleet buyers and policy people at the trade site, and a very large general public audience at the downtown Open Space. Few events in this directory serve a trade and a consumer audience so deliberately at once, in separate places.

IAA MOBILITY side events

The Open Space is effectively a city-wide programme in its own right, spread across central Munich squares with free access and a broad mobility-themed content offering. Around both sites, manufacturers run their own launches and hospitality. Munich in September is also approaching Oktoberfest, which compounds the accommodation problem. Aspire does not run any of it.

The critical practical point is the two-site format: the trade summit and conference sit at the Messe Muenchen grounds in Riem, well east of the city, while the Open Space is in the centre with free access. Getting to Messe Muenchen and the Open Space in central Munich

The Messe Muenchen grounds in Riem are served by U-Bahn line U2 at Messestadt West and Messestadt Ost, roughly 25 minutes from the city centre. Munich Airport is about 40 minutes to the centre by S-Bahn. The Open Space sites in central Munich are walkable from the Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz.

Where to stay for IAA MOBILITY

Central Munich suits the Open Space and is a straightforward U-Bahn ride to the Messe. Rates are high in September and rise further as Oktoberfest approaches, which overlaps the later part of the month. Book early, and check the Oktoberfest dates for the year before assuming normal pricing applies.

What to know before booking IAA MOBILITY

The Open Space is free, which is unusual for an event of this scale and means a large share of visitors never buy a ticket at all. If your interest is the trade programme, that is the Messe Muenchen site and a separate proposition. Note too that this is not the Frankfurt motor show under a new name in a practical sense: the format changed substantially along with the city.
