GitHub Universe by the numbers
Every figure links to where it came from. Attendance for an event that has not happened is a projection, and each row says so rather than presenting it as a count.

What is GitHub Universe?
GitHub Universe is GitHub's own developer conference, held at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. The 2026 dates are 28 to 29 October, with a separate paid Day of Learning at GitHub HQ on the 30th. It is where GitHub makes its platform and Copilot announcements. The waterfront Fort Mason setting makes it a notably smaller and more contained event than the Moscone-scale conferences elsewhere in this directory.
Who goes to GitHub Universe?
Developers, platform and DevOps engineers, engineering leadership, and open source maintainers, plus GitHub's partner ecosystem. It is a product-and-platform conference rather than a general software event, so the value depends heavily on whether your organisation builds on GitHub's platform and increasingly on whether you are deploying Copilot.
GitHub Universe side events
San Francisco fills that week with developer meetups, vendor happy hours and open source community gatherings across SoMa and the Marina, none of them on GitHub's official programme. The Day of Learning at GitHub HQ on 30 October is GitHub's own paid extension and had sold out when this page was last checked. Aspire does not run any of the surrounding events.
GitHub Universe tickets and costs
The in-person pass is $1,399 and was marked selling fast. The $1,099 early bird closed on 20 August 2026, so that saving is gone. Teams of four or more pay $1,119 per pass, a 20 per cent discount that is easy to miss. A workshop add-on is $99 and a certification voucher $30. The virtual pass is free. San Francisco in late October is mild and often the city's best weather.

Getting to Fort Mason Center
Fort Mason Center is on the northern waterfront in the Marina district. It is not close to BART, so from San Francisco International expect a taxi or ride-hail of roughly 30 to 40 minutes, or BART to Embarcadero plus a bus or short ride. Parking at Fort Mason is limited and fills early.
Where to stay for GitHub Universe
The Marina, Cow Hollow and Fisherman's Wharf are the closest and are walkable or a very short ride. Downtown and SoMa are cheaper and better supplied but add 20 to 30 minutes each way, which matters more here than at a downtown venue. Late October is not peak season, so rates are more reasonable than in spring.
What to know before booking GitHub Universe
The free virtual pass is unusually generous - streamed keynotes plus recorded sessions afterwards - and for anyone who only wants the announcements it makes the $1,399 in-person ticket a genuine choice rather than a default. Note also that Fort Mason is on the waterfront in the Marina, not in SoMa where most San Francisco tech conferences sit, so hotel logic that works for Moscone events does not apply here.
GitHub Universe: common questions
When is GitHub Universe 2026?
28 to 29 October 2026 at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. A separate paid Day of Learning runs at GitHub headquarters on 30 October, though that had sold out when this page was last checked.
How much is a GitHub Universe ticket?
The in-person pass is $1,399 and was marked selling fast. Groups of four or more pay $1,119 per pass. The $1,099 early-bird rate closed on 20 August 2026, so that $300 saving is no longer available.
Is there a free way to attend GitHub Universe?
Yes. The virtual pass costs nothing and covers streamed keynotes, virtual-only content and full access to recorded sessions after the event. For anyone who mainly wants the announcements, it is a genuine alternative to travelling.
Are there add-ons beyond the main pass?
Yes. A workshop add-on is $99 and a certification voucher is $30. The Day of Learning at GitHub HQ on 30 October is priced separately and had sold out when this page was last checked on 30 August 2026.
Who organises GitHub Universe?
GitHub runs it as its own first-party developer conference. Aspire has no role in organising it. The official site is githubuniverse.com and passes should be bought there rather than through any third-party reseller.
Where is Fort Mason Center?
On San Francisco's northern waterfront in the Marina district, not in SoMa where Moscone-based conferences are held. It is not near BART, so budget for a taxi or ride-hail from the airport rather than assuming a rail connection.
