What is Sundance?

Sundance is the leading American independent film festival, and the 2027 edition from 21 to 31 January is the first held in Boulder, Colorado, after roughly four decades in Park City, Utah. That move is the single most important fact about this edition: venues, accommodation, transport and cost all change, and a very large volume of published guidance still describes Park City.

Who goes to Sundance?

Independent filmmakers premiering work, acquisitions executives from distributors and streamers, sales agents, festival programmers, press and a substantial public audience. Sundance functions as an acquisitions market as much as a festival, which is why the first six days carry most of the significance.

Sundance side events

The unofficial programme around Sundance has historically been large, with brand activations, distributor parties and industry lounges. How that transplants to Boulder is genuinely unknown for the first edition, since the Park City infrastructure that hosted it does not exist there. Aspire does not run any of it.

Sundance tickets and costs

Screening venues include the Dairy Arts Center, Boulder Theater, Chautauqua Auditorium, Cinemark Century Boulder, eTown Hall, Boulder High School and auditoriums on the CU Boulder campus, with additional programming at the Canyon Theater in the public library. No ticket pricing was confirmed for this entry. January in Boulder is cold and at altitude, roughly 1,650 metres, which affects people more than they expect.

Getting to Multiple venues across Boulder

Denver International is roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Boulder by road, with bus services running the route. Boulder itself is compact and the venues are spread across the city and the CU campus rather than concentrated on one street, which is a change from the Park City model.

Where to stay for Sundance

Boulder proper puts you nearest the venues but has limited hotel stock for an event of this size. Denver is an hour away and much better supplied. Because this is the first Boulder edition, there is no established pattern to follow, so booking early matters more than usual rather than less.

What to know before booking Sundance

Treat the first Boulder edition as an unknown quantity on logistics. Park City was a small ski town with four decades of festival infrastructure; Boulder is a university city that has never done this. Accommodation patterns, shuttle routes and which venues matter are all being established for the first time, so book conservatively and do not rely on old advice.
