Venice Film Festival by the numbers

Every figure links to where it came from. Attendance for an event that has not happened is a projection, and each row says so rather than presenting it as a count.

What is Venice Film Festival?

The Venice Film Festival, the Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica, is the oldest film festival in the world and runs on the Lido di Venezia from 2 to 12 September 2026. This is the 83rd edition, organised by La Biennale di Venezia and directed by Alberto Barbera. Unlike Cannes it is not industry-only: the public can buy tickets to screenings, which makes it materially more accessible than its reputation suggests.

Who goes to Venice Film Festival?

International distributors, sales agents, festival programmers, press and talent, alongside a genuine public audience. Venice has become a significant awards-season launch platform, so studio and streamer campaigns treat early September as the start of their run. The Lido setting keeps everything concentrated in a small area.

Venice Film Festival side events

The Venice Production Bridge industry programme runs alongside the Festival, and the Lido and central Venice fill with distributor parties, sales screenings and brand events across the eleven days. Much of the industry activity is accreditation-gated rather than public. Aspire does not run any of it.

Venice Film Festival tickets and costs

There are two distinct routes in: public tickets to screenings, and industry accreditation through La Biennale. They are different products and the accreditation categories have their own criteria. No prices are quoted here because none were confirmed against an official page for this entry. Early September on the Lido is warm, and Venice is at the tail of peak tourist season.

Getting to Lido di Venezia

Venice Marco Polo airport connects to the city by water or road, and the Lido is reached by vaporetto from Venice proper, typically 15 to 20 minutes from San Marco. There are no cars in central Venice, so every transfer involves boats and walking. Build in far more time than distances suggest.

Where to stay for Venice Film Festival

The Lido itself is closest to the venues and has limited stock that sells out months ahead. Central Venice means a vaporetto each way but has far more choice. Mestre on the mainland is much cheaper and adds a longer commute. Book early: this is one of the tightest accommodation markets in this directory.

What to know before booking Venice Film Festival

The Lido is a separate island from the Venice most visitors know, reached by vaporetto, and that journey is the practical constraint on the whole festival. Staying in central Venice means a water bus each way. Accommodation on the Lido itself is limited and goes very early, which is the single thing to sort out first.

How do I get to the Lido?

By vaporetto from central Venice, typically 15 to 20 minutes from San Marco. The Lido is a separate island and there are no cars in central Venice, so every journey involves boats. That commute is the main practical constraint of the festival.

How is Venice different from Cannes?

Venice is older, sells tickets to the public, and runs in early September as an awards-season launch platform. Cannes is industry and press only, runs in May, and is a market as much as a festival. Venice is the more accessible of the two.
